Sports day 2021

posted Jun 18, 2021, 8:50 AM by Owen Breslin

After what has been a bit of a tough year for everyone, we were determined to make Sports Day 2021 our best ever!  On Wednesday last the boys and girls had one of the greatest sports days ever.

As part of sports day, Killeigh NS held our inaugural Colour Run. Children ran in their class groups around the Killeigh walking track. At intervals around the track they were sprinkled with coloured dust. It was great fun and everyone got into the spirit of the day. As part of our fundraising efforts, sponsorship had been collected beforehand. We are very grateful to everyone who contributed so generously!

In addition to the Colour run, other activities included
  • inflatable basketball targets
  • novelty races
  • bubbles station
  • parachute
  • no mans land
  • rounders
  • Gaelic football
  • novelty games
  • obstacle course
  • disco room
  • BBQ
A huge amount of planning and effort went into preparing each station. We are very grateful to our wonderful staff for giving up their time to help out with this. The good news is that the children all had a ball.

We are very grateful to members of our parents association for helping out on the day. We also appreciate the efforts that our BBQ master Paul Bergin went to in order to keep our young athletes fed.

We particularly wish to thank Clodiagh Gaels for the use of their facilities for the colour run.

Active School Week

posted Jun 17, 2021, 6:10 AM by Jakki Moriarty   [ updated Jun 18, 2021, 6:14 AM ]

After having spent last years active week at home the staff and children were delighted to be able to celebrate this with friends at school. We have had an active element to all the activities this week. Children did Maths trails, SESE classes were taken outdoors where they identified native trees. The children availed of their locality and visited and took in the history of the Blessed Wells here in Killeigh. They did orienteering, took reading and SPHE lessons outdoors, all to incorporate an active element into their day.

Mr. Breslin set the field up with a really great Obstacle course, the children took part in the well loved Novelty races such as the Egg 'n Spoon and Sack race. The staffroom became a Disco Dome with lantern lights, led balloons and glow sticks and the kids showed off their moves to Just Dance. Some classes enjoyed new games this year which entailed trays, ping pong balls, clothes pegs and blindfolds.

The Whole School Event and absolute highlight of the week was the Colour Run. It was such a success. The children took delight in being doused in fabulous bright coloured powder and the teachers had fun running and getting a dust too. We will put together a short movie of wonderful photos taken by photographer Paula Nolan which we will put on the website next week. We were so lucky to have beautiful weather which made it all the better!

A Walk in Our Locality
The children were taken on a walk of their local area. They visited and got the history of the Blessed Well in Killeigh. Some of the children were familiar with it but for many it was their first visit. The children enjoyed it and were able to go home and talk to their parents about their locality.

Tell it Spell it Thursday’.

Hi Everyone, Big thanks to those of you sending in photos and videos of yourselves keeping busy and doing lots of active stuff this week. We are loving them and will be putting together a nice collage at the end of this all so keep them coming.

How did you all get on with the Reaction Time Challenge? My number was 33 and I think I pulled a muscle….whoops!

Our challenge today is ‘Spell your Name PE’. You will see the document below. It shows the alphabet a-z but beside each letter is an exercise. If you have a short or easy name then you can add your surname. By the way….the letter J is a killer…be warned those of you with J in your name.

Here is a photo of a Scavenger Hunt that we did, all items from the back garden. From 10 down to 1….. why not give it a go! Or make your very own obstacle course with whatever you find at home/ in the garden and send us you’re a photo of your one.

Best of luck – don’t forget to snap and share!

Don’t forget Joe Wicks extremely energetic session every morning at 9am live or catch him later in the day either at PE with Joe.

Enjoy your Thursday!

'Work it out Wednesday’.

Boys and Girls today we are testing your reaction times. Place 4 items around you, make a square shape. Someone in the room sets a 60 second timer and calls an item. The idea is that you have to touch it as fast as you can. You must touch as many as you can in the 60 seconds. Post your number on Seesaw. I will be posting mine later – just have to do my stretches first.

You can make it harder by including more items and widen the space if you have it. Let us know how you did it.

Best of luck – don’t forget to snap and share!

Have a Wonderful Wednesday!

Active Home Week Tuesday

Good Morning Everyone,

Hope you got on well with yesterdays challenge and more importantly that you enjoyed it. If you have any ideas or activities you would like to share please do. We would love to see you get active at home enjoying the outdoors. Send a note, a photo or video to Seesaw and share with your class/school. We love to hear from you.

Todays activity is;

‘Tough it out Tuesday’

Get into a plank position with some blocks, tins of beans, peas or anything you can find at home to build a pyramid with. Place these to one side so there’s room to build the pyramid in front of you.

While you are in your plank position you must try to build a pyramid. It’s tough. You can use both hands alternatively to lift the blocks/ tins to make the pyramid.

To make it a little easier you could build a small pyramid. Those of you who are very strong and much fitter than I am build a bigger one. Have a look at the video for a demonstration. We can’t wait to see your pyramids.

Please snap and share!

This week sees the start of Active Home School Week. We can't wait to start getting active and we really hope you join us. Ms Moriarty is organising this week's activities and she has sent the following message.

Dear Children,

This year Active Week has become Active Home Week due to Covid 19. We are encouraging children to get active from Monday. Try and do 60 minutes or more of physical activity during the week. Killeigh Kids are a great bunch for being active anyway so this will be no bother to you all. We will post an activity each day this week. We would love it if you could send us pictures or videos of you doing the activities and we will share them towards the end of the week. There is also an activity log here that you can fill out with all of your activities.

Here is a video of Ms Ms Moriarty telling us about Active Home Week
