Engineers Visit - John Ryan

posted Mar 31, 2019, 4:05 PM by Owen Breslin

One of the most enjoyable aspects of Engineers Week is the engineers class visit. This year the boys and girls in 3rd and 4th class were paid a visit by parent John Ryan, who spoke to the children about the work of an engineer. He also spoke to them about problem solving and how engineers solve everyday problems. He also demonstrated how new technologies such as Augmented Reality can be used. We are very grateful to John for coming in and being so generous with his time. The children really enjoyed the experience.

The tower had to support the weight of a 100grm bag of rice.

The boys and girls of 5th class visited telecom giant Ericsson in Athlone today. First of all Jerome told us all about hacking and how Ericsson use hacking to test their systems. We were also introduced to a past pupil Sean Kelly who is on work experience in Ericsson at the moment. He told us all about how he loves coding and how he is currently studying in Athlone IT. Sinead gave a presentation to the boys and girls all about the work of Eriksen worldwide and what they do . We were  introduced to a colleague of hers David, who is working in India via teleconference call.  The pupils  were very interested in seeing how people from different countries can work together.

Dylan and Conor told us about servers and how they are used in Ericsson and we were shown one of the server rooms.

Finally Tom spoke to us about his life as an engineer.

It was a  very enjoyable day and we are very grateful to Sinead O'Reilly for the one invitation and for making today so enjoyable for the boys and girls.
