Making butter: Materials and change

Making butter: Materials and change

First class enjoyed an afternoon of making and tasting butter. As we were covering the farm and journey of milk in SESE this

tied in nicely. Children observed he changes that occur in materials from cream to buttermilk to butter through the shaking of

the jar of cream. We then tasted our butter on cream crackers , discussed the uses of buttermilk and the results of our

experiment I.e what we could change during our investigation if we were to do it again.

Fourth class take on the egg drop challenge - Materials and Change

posted Mar 25, 2019, 1:39 PM by Owen Breslin   [ updated May 3, 2019, 6:38 AM ]

Ms Ryans 4th class learned all about forces recently and took on the egg drop challenge. They brainstormed ways of enabling the egg to glide or at least some way of reducing the effect of gravity on the fall of an egg. They also explored ways they could protect the egg. They looked at other ways that items are protected and found examples everywhere including car safety belts, egg boxes, flight cases for microphones, foam packing for new electronics.  After they had designed their protection system, it was time for the big drop test and the good news was that all eggs survived.

6th class experiment with light

posted Mar 9, 2019, 3:29 PM by Owen Breslin

6th class learned all about light back in January. They were split into small groups and asked to design a demonstration or experiment that would demonstrate a concept they had learned about.  They produced very interesting demonstrations that showed different sources of light, reflection, refraction and that light can be split into different colors.

Science Blast

The boys and girls of 5th class have been busy recently completing a science project which tested which soil type would be best for growing lettuce. We tested peaty soil, clay, sandy soil and loam to see which one would prove to be the best. As we predicted Loam provided the best overall results, On Wed 6th March we took this project to Science Blast 2019 in the RDS. We will have a full report tomorrow, but for now here are the pictures from what was an excellent day.

Science Week 2018

posted Dec 3, 2018, 2:01 PM by Owen Breslin   [ updated Dec 3, 2018, 2:45 PM ]

Pupils from across Killeigh NS recently  took part in fun science activities to celebrate science week.  A fun week was finished off in style with a fantastic science fair which was hosted by Mr Breslins 5th class and Ms Ryans 4th class. There were a wide range of experiments and demonstrations including
how pulleys can lighten the load
  • electromagnets
  • lava lamp
  • surface tension of milk
  • elephant toothpaste
  • how light can be bent
  • sound is a series of vibrations
  • the solar system
  • how balloons can support a group of children
  • charge a phone using a watermelon
  • how carbon dioxide can be made and used to blow out candles
  • slime
Please find a selection of the photos from the day. Unfortunately due to technical difficulties some of the pictures went missing. Apologies to anyone who does not feature here.

5th class learned how to use the same principles as a pulley to easily pull 2 broom handles together.

The boys and girls of 6th class were invited into the Tullamore College Science fair recently. This has become one of the most eagerly awaited events of the calendar and everyone had a great day. Thanks to Tullamore college for the invite.

Learning about Lungs - 3rd class

posted Nov 23, 2018, 4:44 AM by Owen Breslin

The boys and girls in Ms Dunnes class have been very busy learning about lungs and the respiratory system.
We watched a video that showed little pictures of the bronchiole and the alveolus and the rest of the lungs. We learned about how our lungs work.

Then we did an experiment where  we recorded how many times we breathed in a minute when we were sitting down. After this we did exercise for a minute and recorded our breathing for a minute. We found that we breathe more when we were doing the exercises.

Finally we made a model of the respiratory system.

Visit of Dale Treadwell - Caring for our environment

posted Oct 23, 2018, 6:44 AM by Owen Breslin   [ updated May 15, 2019, 1:54 AM ]

We had a special visitor to our school today (15th Oct). Renowned Heritage Expert and environmentalist Dale Treadwell visited the senior classes to explore the theme of Biodiversity. Biodiversity is the theme of our  latest  Green Flag and Dale explained the meaning of biodiversity and he gave examples of biodiversity in action. Each child got to check out a bug viewer complete with mini beasts. There were lady birds, shale beetles, spiders, centipedes  to choose from.

He also showed us a very interesting video about bees and he appealed for us to help save our bees He briefly mentioned the All Ireland pollinator plan and told us what we could do as a school to make a difference.  Indeed he planted a selection of pollinator friendly plants including Dahlias, Buddleias and Lupins with 5th class.

It was a very enjoyable visit and we wish to express our gratitude to Dale and Heritage in Schools for giving so generously of his time.

Dale was also very helpful to 5th class with their science project on our school garden. For more information on this aspect please click here
