Science Blast 2019

posted Mar 7, 2019, 3:23 PM by Owen Breslin

The boys and girls of 5th class have been busy recently completing a science project which tested which soil type would be best for growing lettuce. We tested peaty soil, clay, sandy soil and loam to see which one would prove to be the best. As we predicted Loam provided the best overall results, On Wed 6th March we took this project to Science Blast 2019 in the RDS. We will have a full report tomorrow, but for now here are the pictures from what was an excellent day.

Pupils from across Killeigh NS recently  took part in fun science activities to celebrate science week.  A fun week was finished off in style with a fantastic science fair which was hosted by Mr Breslins 5th class and Ms Ryans 4th class. Pupils really enjoyed showing off  and explaining the wide range of experiments and demonstrations including

  • how pulleys can lighten the load
  • electromagnets
  • lava lamp
  • surface tension of milk
  • elephant toothpaste
  • how light can be bent
  • sound is a series of vibrations
  • the solar system
  • how balloons can support a group of children
  • charge a phone using a watermelon
  • how carbon dioxide can be made and used to blow out candles
  • slime
Please find a selection of the photos from the day. Unfortunately due to technical difficulties some of the pictures went missing. Apologies to anyone who does not feature here.
