Engineers week - Microsoft Dream Space events - Think like an Engineer & Code Like an Engineer

posted Jun 24, 2021, 12:55 PM by Owen Breslin

Members of 5th and 6th class took part in two Microsoft Dream Space events.

Think like an Engineer - pupils used an internet enabled device to log on from home but the tasks were "unplugged" which meant that other than logging on from home, they did not use a computer. There were a number of speakers and a number of challenges that required just a pen and paper.

Code Like an Engineer - Pupils logged on from home and  learned the basics of coding  They were introduced to the micro:bit and learned how to program the micro:bit. This session was full of fun and engagement and allowed the pupils the opportunity to think like a software engineer.

Both sessions were fun, interesting and challenging and the boys and girls who undertook it from our school really enjoyed it.

M Maddens class had a great time during Engineers Week. They took on the egg drop challenge and they also learned about how technology uses a series of dots or pixels to make complete pictures. They designed their own "Dot Pixel drawings".

Well done boys and girls.

Engineers Week Wrapup

posted Mar 14, 2021, 2:52 PM by Owen Breslin

Engineers Week has become one of the most anticipated weeks of the academic year. This year was very different as many of our pupils were still at home, while our younger pupils had just returned to the scho0l building. Pupils engaged in the following activities:

  • watched STEPS Engineers week shows
  • engaged in engineering challenges
  • learned about the work of an engineer
  • attended the Microsoft Dream Space workshops
  • attended a Digital visit by an engineer

What should have been a very quiet Engineers week actually turned out to be one of our most successful ever. We wish to thank Ciarán Ó'hÁoláin, software engineer for giving his time to prepare a presentation and talk to the pupils about the work of an engineer. We also thank all of the helpers who helped out our budding engineers especially for the tasks completed at home. Our school staff had many other activities to be completed but as usual got behind Engineers Week and gave it their full support and for this we are very grateful. Finally we especially wish to thank our young engineers for bringing their imagination, their creativity and their enthusiasm to all of the activities they participated in.

Pupils in Ms Phelans class took part in Engineers week by designing and building their own marble runs. While I do not want to spoil the surprise, these are some of the greatest marble runs I have ever seen. Well done boys and girls!

Unfortunately this years Engineers week fell during the recent school closure for Ms Molloys 3rd class. However this enthusiastic bunch still managed to take part and submitted entries on the following challenges. They designed a boat that could float and take some very little passengers and they also took on the egg drop challenge.

They showed great imagination in both. Well done boys and girls!

Pupils also designed their ideal pencil case.

Engineers Week - Ms Screeeney's Sen Inf / 1st class- Stunning Structures

posted Mar 12, 2021, 3:17 AM by Owen Breslin

The boys and girls in Ms Screeeney's class were very busy during Engineers week making their own super structures using playdoh and toothpicks. After watching the STEPS Engineers week show Explorium (Primary School): Build A Bridge and Get Over it!!!, they discovered that structures built in the shape of a pyramid are actually stronger than a cube shape. They had great fun testing this out.
