Maths of Science Blast

How we use maths to make sense of our Science Blast data

This year Ms Molloys 5th class took part in the Science Blast competition. They attempted to try and find a link between Mood and colour. As part of this work they initially had a class survey and then after analysing the initial results they designed and issued a survey via google forms which they asked pupils, parents and teachers to fill in.

The class then used mathematics to analyse and present their data in the following ways:

• tallying was used to count answers up before we could find final numbers

• averages were used for initial guessing and analysis

• bar charts and pie charts were used to present data from the surveys

The use of mathematics was vital to the success of the project and the Science Blast judge was very complimentary to the boys and girls on the manner in which they presented their findings.
