Safer Internet Day 2022

Dear Parents,

Today, as a school we will be taking part in Safer Internet Day 2022. Each class will be taking part and teachers across the school will be exploring the topic of Safer Internet Use using a variety of different lessons depending on each class level.

As parents, you play a vital role in helping your children to use the internet in a safe, respectful manner. There are many resources available on the excellent webwise.ie/parents website and we strongly encourage you to use this resource.

One of the key messages on this Safer Internet Day is that having regular open conversations is one of the most effective ways of supporting your child online. Webwise is running the #TalkListenLearn  campaign as part of Safer Internet Day 2022.

The #TalkListenLearn campaign encourages parents to have open and regular conversations with their child about the internet. To talk to them about benefits and the risks, but also to listen to what their child has to say and to learn about their life online. Research consistently shows that many children do not tell if something goes wrong online. Having conversations with your child is one of the most effective ways of ensuring that they have a safe and positive experience, and to help them to feel comfortable coming to you if they encounter an issue.

More information can be found at https://www.webwise.ie/talklistenlearn/  and in the attached notes.

Finally there is a lovely resource available to support this. A conversation topic generator can be found at https://talklistenlearn.webwise.ie/questions/

We would encourage parents of our older pupils in particular, to use this resource.

Safer Internet Day - Ms Phelans 2nd Class

Ms Phelans class learned about how we use the internet and how to stay safe. Tips included checking with an adult before using a website and sticking to websites that are secure. Above all, they learned that they should talk to a grown up if they see or hear anything mean or upsetting online. They finished with a fun Kahoot quiz.

SID - Ms Dermodys class

Ms Dermodys infant class read the story of Buddy the dog. Buddy is learning how to use his new tablet properly. The most important thing he learns is to ask a grown up for help. They also learned the Tablet safety song and they drew pictures of children using their tablet safely and asking their parents if something they don't recognize appears on screen.
