Engineers week 2023  Engineers visits

As part of Engineers week every year we invite engineers to visit the school and describe their work to the children. This year we were incredibly lucky to have 2 fascinating visitors in Ian Jones and Assumpta McGowan. We are incredibly grateful to both and thank them most sincerely for sharing their expertise with us.

6th class - Visit Mr Ian Jones - Manufacturing Engineer with Intel Ireland

As part of Engineers Week one of our 6th class parents, Ian Jones visited 6th class to talk about his work as an engineer with Intel. Ian described the products that Intel make and the environment in which they are made. The children were fascinated to learn that Ian and his team use 3d Modeling and Augmented Reality to plan the layout of the factory floor. The machines that make each intel chip are very expensive and high tech and each one requires an enormous network of electric cables and different pipes bringing the different chemicals needed to make each chip. Ian spoke of the design process and how each team works together to solve problems and ensure that the best outcome is achieved.

5th class - Visit of Assumpta McGowan - quality engineer with Sennheiser

As part of Engineers Week one of our 5th class parents, Assumpta McGowan visited 5th class to talk about her work as an engineer with Sennheiser. Sennheiser produces some of the worlds most popular headphones and a large part of Assuptas role is to ensure the quality of each one. In a wonderfully entertaining presentation, she described the design process for each set of headphones and then the various processes that follow to ensure the production of each product. The children got to see examples of the different parts that make up a set of headphones including transducers, magnets, diaghrams etc The boys and girls learned how a speaker works. Assumpta spoke of her path to becoming an engineer and the qualities that engineers might have. She also spoke of how you need to work as part of a team to ensure success.  The children were particularly interested to hear of some of the different places in the world that Assumpta gets to travel to as part of her work.

Finally, she very kindly donated some headphones to the school on behalf of Sennheiser and she raffled off a set of headphones in the class.
