Science 22/23

Living Things

Pupils in 3rd and 4th class learned about our natural peatlands when Paula Harte from the Irish Peatland Conservation Council visited the school as part of the Heritage in Schools Programme.

Pupils in 3rd class learned all about chicks, how to care for them and what happen when they hatch. For more details of both of these activities please click on the photo.

Environmental Awareness and Care

Pupils in Sen Infants, and 6th class all learned about the importance of conserving energy. Paula Harte visiting on behalf of SEAI had two different workshops for each age level. With the aid of her puppet friend Oscar she spoke to the senior infant classes about how we use energy and how we might save energy.

Pupils in Ms Regans 2nd and 3rd class learned about the impact of throwing away rubbish. Which materials would decompose and which would not.

Forces

Pupils from Ms Regans class learned about how moving air can be a very powerful force. We explored ways moving air can be used to move objects, We then learned about how compressed air can be particularly strong force. After a further discussion and exploration of the topic, the boys and girls designed their own rocket powered by compressed air. Click here for more

Materials

Pupils from senior infants learned about how materials can have different properties. They tested a range of materials for these properties. They learned that materials can be transparent or opaque. They also explored how some materials can be soft and squidgy, other materials firm and some materials very hard. They also done a serach of the environment around the school to explore how some of these materials might be used. e.g. the walls of the school are hard, our rubbers are a little flexible, the playdough is very soft and squidgy so we can mould it into whatever shape we like.

Science Week - Science At Home

During covid-19 we were unable to host an in school Science Fair as part of Science Week. Instead, pupils were invited to submit videos of their own science experiments, projects or thoughts about science. This proved to be so popular that we continued it again this year. Pupils were invited to do a science experiment or demo and submit their work. We are delighted to see so many get involved and we also loved seeing our parents get involved as well. Well done all. Everyone who submitted something received a homework pass as a reward for their hard work.  Click here for our Science At Home mini site.

Science Week 2022

Our pupils absolutely love STEM activities and every year, Science Week is one of the most popular weeks of the year and this year proved to be busier than ever. Click the logo to see the activities that pupils got involved with
