24th March - Peas and Radishes

Post date: Mar 24, 2015 11:2:15 PM

I have consulted with a lot of people on what we should be planting in our raised beds in order to make the most of them. We are trying to time some of our vegetables better this year so we need to plant crops for harvesting in June as soon as possible. Other crops will go in later with the aim of being ready for the autumn. Radishes were recommended by several people as an easy growing vegetable that should be ready for June. We planted peas last year in the garden with reasonable success so today Ms Sheerans class sowed peas and radishes in one of the beds.

In order to encourage some of the vegetables to come in early (or even on time by the end of June) we have planned to build a number of cloches over some of the beds. Basically its just a plastic cover over the bed that will hopefully trap some of the suns heat and warm the soil. Today we started to build it for the cabbage bed. Despite the wonderful assistance of 5th class we have much to do to finish these. Hopefully we can get these in by the end of the week.

Hopefully this is the last blog post without pictures!
