Colin Dunne Primary Schools Track and Field Championship

Every year, Offaly Athletics run the Colin Dunne Primary Schools Track and Field Championship meeting for primary schools in Offaly in the Tullamore Harriers. It is one of the most popular school events of the year and two boys teams and two girls teams travelled from Scoil Shinchill, Killeigh. All of our Athletes performed very well, however we were unsuccessful when it came to the top prizes. Nevertheless, it was a very enjoyable event and we are very grateful to Tullamore for hosting.

Killeigh Pupils play in Gaynor Cup

We wish to congratulate 6th class pupil Leah Stack and former pupil Ellen Gorman who played in the prestigious Gaynor Cup soccer tournament last week with their Midlands team. The girls got to the final where it took penalties to seperate themselves and a Carlow selection narrowly shaded the contest. Well done to the girls and their team mates for getting so far and doing so well.

Offaly Day - Best of luck Offaly U20s

Today we celebrated Offaly Day. Offaly Day was the brainchild of the Offaly Cuman na mBunscoil and it encouraged every school in the county to host a jersey day, learn the Offaly Rover and do some activities on school that had Offaly as its theme. This was all to celebrate the fact  that the Offaly U20 hurlers play in an All Ireland final on Sunday.

Our pupils practised their skills, hung up Offaly colours,  learned the Offaly Rover, and made Offaly themed art pieces. Mr White also visited many of our classes to teach them all about the rich GAA heritage that we have in Offaly.

We wish the lads all the best on Sunday in the final. We are especially proud of our own Ruairí Dunne and Kieran Coonan. Best of luck lads!

Student Council Visit

Our Student Council visited Leinster House today to learn how democracy works. They had a fabulous tour of the Dail, the Seanad and other key areas in the Parliament buildings. This was followed by a workshop with the Oireachtas Education Officer. Earlier we had visited the GPO and learned the story of the Easter Rising in 1916 through an incredible audio visual display, before going next door for lunch in McDonald’s! We also walked through the historic Trinity College .

Best of luck Offaly!

We are delighted to see Offaly hurling on the up and we are incredibly proud to see our ex pupils so heavily involved. Its a huge week ahead for Offaly and we wish Liam, Conor and Joey and the rest of the Offaly senior team the very best of luck in the Joe McDonagh Cup final on Saturday and we wish Kieran and Ruairí and the Offaly U20s the very best of luck in the All Ireland final on Sunday 4th June. To get ready for these two big games we have put up our Offaly flags and bunting.

Tiernan Grennan R.I.P.

On Thursday morning, our hearts were broken with the news of the passing of our beloved past pupil Tiernan Grennan.

Tiernan spent 8 years in our school where he will always be remembered by everyone who knew him for his warm, kind nature and ever- present smile. He was deeply loved by classmates and staff alike.

Our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to his parents Willie and Carol, his sister Aoibhe, his grandparents, cousins and his large circle of friends. You are in our every thought and prayer.

First Holy Communion

We send our warmest congratulations to the boys and girls in 2nd class received the sacrament of First Holy Communion last Saturday. We thank Ms Fox and Ms Regan for preparing them so well, Fr John for all his work with both classes and everyone who helped prepare the church. This year we were delighted to welcome our school choir back after an absence due to covid over recent years. Thanks a million to the teachers involved and to the boys and girls who turned up in such great numbers.

Boys hurling

Our boys hurling team have been training hard this year and played some great hurling in their group games against Durrow and Rahan. Unfortunately, results did not go our way and we exited the championship. We travelled to Clara on Monday for our last game of the year where we played 2 games side by side. There are some very talented young hurlers in this group and we look forward to seeing them develop their skills even further in the coming years.

Arts BLAST 3rd class

Miss Moriartys 3rd class took part in the Schools Art Blast Initiative where the children  got to work with a local artist. Her name was Mary Slevin from Mount Henry Art Studio in Killenard. In order to come up with ideas for the Art the children talked about what was important to them. They had been learning about the Environment and Habitats in Geography and Science and so decided to go with this as an idea for the Art Blast project.

The children did a brainstorm with Mary, the process involved a few steps. This is evident in the video that accompanies this. They kept it local - the school grounds; animals, birds, and wildlife that exists around us. The end result; 3 fabulous boards with Artwork that depict our school. The boys & girls really enjoyed the process. They learned lots of tips, techniques and ideas from Mary and really pushed themselves to let go, explore and have fun with the Art.

Brendan our Caretaker did a great job hanging the boards in the Courtyard which sits in the middle of the school surrounded by windows for all the school to look at and enjoy. They have been treated with a special outdoor varnish to protect them and we all agree they look pretty good.

Pollinator Day

Pupils from 3rd, 4th and 5th class had a very enjoyable and engaging visit from Edel Heeran from Heritage Schools through Laois Education Centre. Edel visited us last year where we explored our school grounds and garden. We looked at the different types of trees and lichen that grow on them. This time Edel spoke to us about Pollinators. We looked at a bee pollinator box, a smoker, Honeybees and a Wasp under a magnifier. Children looked at pollen loaves and enjoyed a fabulous slideshow all about Pollinators and the different types of bees in Ireland. They learned that there are 98 types of wild bees (21 Bumble and 77 Solitary bees) & 1 Honey Bee. They learned all about the importance of providing wild areas for the bees and got lots of little tips and ideas on how to easily do this in their gardens at home. Thank you Edel for the very educational and fun talk.
