A bog in a bottle

Pupils from Ms Moriartys 3rd class, Ms Regans 2nd.3rd class and Mr Phelans 4th class, all enjoyed a visit from Paula Harte from the Irish Peatland Conservation Council. As part of the heritage in schools project, Paula talked to the boys and girls about the habitat found in our Irish peatlands. As well as giving a presentation, Paula had lots of little creatures to show the boys and girls. They also got to use a bog dial which had a key for identifying common bog plants. Finally they made a bog in a bottle. The activities were really engaging and hands on and we are so grateful to Paula for coming in to visit.

Easter Chicks

Miss Moriartys 3rd class with the help of our SNA Róisín incubated 21 eggs before Easter and watched their progress over 3 weeks. The children made sure the incubator was kept on at all times and that the eggs got water each day. After about a week we had a look at the eggs in the dark with a torchlight to see if there were signs of life. We were lucky enough to end up with 14 viable eggs. The children watched the eggs move and eventually begin to crack. The end result were10 beautiful chicks who were born just in time for the Easter Holidays. Róisín brought them home where she looked after them with a  UV light and fed them chick crumb. She was happy to report that the 10 chicks all survived the Easter and are fine, fit and healthy and growing fast. It was a fabulous experience for everyone. Everyone in school came down to visit the new arrivals. One of the more interesting we all learned is that the chicks have an umbilical cord and a belly button.
